Sleep Routine

Sleep is one of the most important aspects of not only a child’s but an adult’s day. We all need enough sleep at night to get through the next day. If you’re too tired, then you lose focus and energy to achieve the day’s tasks. That goes for kids too. They don’t want them falling asleep in class or being too tired to focus on the content they are learning. Make a sleep schedule and stick with it. My kids go to bed at 9:30 pm on school nights and get up at 6:00 am. This gives them enough time to take a shower, get dressed, eat breakfast, and get their school stuff together before they head off to school.

Learning Space

Children and even Young adults need a place where they can do homework and study without distraction from others. See if you can make a space outside of the bedroom that won’t be distracting to them. We use what we call the front room. It has a big window for sunshine to come in, but no T.V. and no video games. The only thing in there are our books, an electric fireplace, and a computer desk. The perfect place to quietly study or do homework.

Time Management

This one might be a little harder for the younger students, but having a planner or calendar so that they can keep track of all their own activities, classes, homework due dates, and extracurriculars. This teaches them responsibility and time management. Parents can keep this for the younger students in their planners or on their calendars. Helping the younger students along the way. Keep reminding them to look at the calendar every morning to see what is going on that day or what is coming due soon.

Ask for help when you need it

Asking for help can sometimes be a difficult thing for students. They are afraid to ask for help. We need to encourage them and ourselves to ask for help when we need it. If an assignment is difficult and it’s stressing you out, there is no need to stay that way when there are people there to help you. Ask a classmate, a parent, a friend, or a teacher. They will most likely take the time to help you figure out your problem so that you can relieve that stress and get back to what’s important.
