When organizing your game room there are some things to think about, we’ll touch on a few here, but I have a post specifically for setting up your game room here. Take a look.

Game Room Set Up and Organizing

Creating your game plan is important to the start of your game room. You want to set the right atmosphere for what will be occurring within the game room. Group board games, video games, arcade games and more are all options for a game room and while some focus on one aspect, others enjoy multiple gaming areas.

Things to keep in mind while setting up your game room are:

Your Budget

You want to make sure you have enough to make your game room that dream you’ve been holding on to for so long. Calculate and recalculate, putting extra money there for any unforeseen accidents of mishaps. You don’t want them to happen, but when they do, you want to be prepared.

Layout/space

Know your dimensions and use that to plan out where things are going to go. Don’t eyeball or guesstimate. The last thing you want to do is purchase something that will be perfect only to realize it doesn’t fit in the space or your layout didn’t factor in the objects dimensions.

Equipment

This is really anything large that will be going in your gaming space, such as entertainment centers, TV’s/Projector, consoles, speakers, and more. Know what will go in and where.

Decor/Comfort

This includes themes, seating, and ease of play. When playing a game are the accessories place where they are easily reachable and stored with ease? Is there enough space to have all the pieces of the board game on the table along with drinks and snacks (or will you have other accommodations for that like pullout tables, or a raise board stand?)

Will your room have a theme? What types of decor and lighting will you have? think about the atmosphere and experience you want to give your gamers as they play.

Note of Advice: If there are some games you don’t play, sell them or donate them before creating space for them when you don’t play them any longer.

Organizing Consoles

There are a few ways to arrange your consoles that will give you an aesthetically pleasing space and keep your consoles organized and easily accessible.

First, and my personal favorite are wall mounts. If you haven’t seen some of these setups, check out this Pinterest page for more ideas. Mounting your systems on the wall can provide a unique way of storing and presenting your consoles at the same time.

You can also organize them in a more traditional way with an entertainment center. They are built with entertainment in mind and you can decide which while serve you best with what systems you have. Entertainment centers also provide a way to hide cords so they aren’t seen (depending on the kind you get, open or closed back).

You can also use shelves or an all in one system to organize your consoles and accessories together. They now make them for most newer consoles. Search ‘storage and charging station’ to get a list of those available.

Games and Accessories

Your games and accessories will also need to be placed in an organized and efficient way as you organize and/or set up your game room. There are many ways for you to organize your accessories from wall mounting your controllers and headsets, to using old music cd cases to keep games. Below is a list of ways you can creatively store and organize your games and accessories.

Storage Ideas:

Board Games

Though we are mostly talking about video games here, I do want to touch on board games as well. We are board gamers, nearly as much as we are video gamers, and I can tell you storage of all our games has become difficult to say the least.

I’ve only found a few ways to organize board games, so if you have some ideas, comment below. We could really use the suggestions.

Ok, so first is the basic bookshelves. Organizing your games by shape and size on the bookshelves or even by genre or category. We have a lot of strategy games but we also have some fun redneck games, fantasy themed games and more.

Then, there is the aesthetically pleasing wall art form of storing your games. By framing the board and hanging it, you can create a creative game room with decorations to match. If there aren’t to many pieces to the game you can try to store them behind the board, find containers, or keep them in the boxes they came in.

If you want to keep them in the boxes they originally came in, but the box lacks the organizing finesse your looking for, there are some games that have organizing inserts for the boxes themselves to keep things in order.

Other

Now let’s talk about some other things that you’ll need to think about as you organize your games, systems, and accessories and that is all the other things that need to be dealt with behind the scenes and extras.

Things like labels if you want to categorize any of your games or label anything: cords, genres, shelves, whatever. Speaking of cords, you don’t want them hanging all willynilly all over the place, right? You can use zip ties, twist ties, or Velcro ties to keep them together and organized. Use a cable management sleeve to also keep them together and possible keep them out of sight.

One more way is to get some cable hiders to keep them as invisible as possible. These can be painted to match any wall for easy camouflage.

If you’re looking for something easy and that you may already have for all those cords your not currently using, you could grab some zip lock bags to keep them secure and together, storing them in a cabinet or drawer near the systems for easy reach when needed.

One more organizational piece you should keep in mind if you have more than one system is a splitter. TV’s are only equip to handle so many HDMI or RCA cables. If you have more than your TV can handle, you may want to get a splitter so you can switch between systems with ease.

Recap:

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, the way you organize your games and systems is completely up to you. You must decide what you are willing to do and pay for to get the type or organization you are looking for. There are some great ideas here for you to try and if you have a suggestion not mentioned here, go ahead and share it in the comments!

Good luck and happy gaming!
