Blake Blessing

With the fear of joining her mother in a mental institution for being crazy, Lilith must with daily to keep from sinking into a pit of darkness from with her mother never returned. Will her men stick it out, or will she loose to the drowning darkness?

About the Story

Blake Blessing has a natural talent for bringing out exceptional characters who are a bit broken and giving them the pieces they need to become whole.

We’ve all struggled with doubts, fears, and becoming exactly like our parents, but Blake takes this a bit further in her new duet: Fractured.

The inner turmoil that plagues the main character on such a deep level; it’s relatable and heart-wrenching, which affects her

everyday decisions and the relationships around her. Hiding her inner demons and keeping them buried inside, until they burst forth in one of the best plot twists I’ve ever read!

Things I loved

Instead of using objects, memories, or exercises, Blake uses relationships to ground the main character to reality. Each one of Lilith’s men are completely different. Each touch on a broken part of Lilith that needed to be whole. Kenzo, the fun-loving bartender; Atticus, small pet phobia ridden professor; Ambrose, the logic questioning author; and Saint, her pharmacist? Well, trust me, it works. With her support system and her best friend (therapist), Lilith is able to keep her head above water.

This story does come with a warning: The main character suffers from mental illness. With that in mind, it may be tough for some to read. Even with my own issues, I was able to enjoy this story.

Blake captures the nuances of mental illness very well; the constant struggles, doubts, every day questions within ones own mind. The wondering, debating and constant worry and fear is expressed in each thought and sentence of the character and her actions as she goes through life. One piling on top of another building a wall of destruction and self blame.

One of my favorite aspects of any story is character connection. If the character don’t connect on a certain level; the story doesn’t do its job connecting the readers to those dynamic relationships and their reasons for what they do. These characters are brought together in a way that speaks to the main characters need for normal human interaction and reality grounding stability.

What I Question

I noticed that one of Lilith’s men is a bit of a background man within the group setting. When he’s alone with Lilith, of course, he gets all the attention, but in a group setting I feel he’s put on the back burner or a fifth wheel, so to speak. Anyone else notice this about Kenzo, or is this just me?

Conclusion

I have yet to read a book by Blake Blessing I didn’t absolutely love. Even with the warning and struggles of my own. I was able to enjoy this story and am in full anticipation for the conclusion of this book duet.

If you are struggling or know someone with mental illness, this story may not be the one for you. Blake shows her support and thoughtfulness by providing helpful links for those who need assistance in the back this book.

This shows she cares for her readers and her desire to help those in need. Who doesn’t love an author who cares for her readers?
