Video games are a great way to relax and take your mind off all the things that are surrounding your days. With beautiful art, graphics, stories and more; some are worth playing again, while others are one time rounds. Some are just nice to look at, the graphics and design are a pleasant experience.

Art within the video game genre has become some of the most well-known visual creations to grace the screens. There have been plenty of fantastic art pieces throughout time. The advancements within the gaming world, video games have now graced the list of art.

Beyond Graphics

The graphics of a game are not the only artistic value that should be taken into account. There is so much more as you think about art. The narrative, visuals, emotions and experience all play a role to a great video game. The deeper your connection to the game, the more it will affect how you play.

Now, let’s look at some games that go beyond graphic arts. The ones that pull you into the game for a fantastic experience.

Horizon: Zero Dawn/Forbidden West

(Complete Edition) Horizon: Zero Dawn
Horizon Forbidden West

Though these images do not do either of these games justice; they are beautifully crafted with fantastic characters, landscapes, and more. The designers worked down to the smallest detail to create a realistic game. Players love the adventure as they follow Aloy to discover her past and protect those that are close to her. This game has easily become one of my favorites as the open world provides an abundance to discover. The story pulls you in and keeps you playing. The need to answer all the questions that arise fuels player to continue for hours. The combat is phenomenal as there are many weapons and battle styles Aloy performs.

These games are just a pleasure to play and experience with the different landscapes, plants, items, and so much more to explore and discover.

Beautiful doesn’t do this game justice with it’s amazingly created art. Ori traveling through his journey, adventuring to different areas with puzzles and combat. The developers created an aesthetically pleasing atmosphere and lovable characters in this series with a great storyline. Your desire to continue collecting items, power-ups and more create a need to uncover more of the map and journey to the end.

The Last of Us

As with Horizon: Zero Dawn and Forbidden West, this post-apocoliptic world created by Naughty Dog provides a great experience with it’s minimal characters and overgrown wilderness. As the main characters struggle to survive, the immersive emotional connection you have as you, the player, try to keep them going as the land takes over and human life is dwindling.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

One of my personal favorites for the Switch console is Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. With more open world games coming out and the option to follow the storyline or explore the lands for anything you can find, it makes for an amazing experience that lasts for as long as you wish to complete the game. The landscape of this game is beautiful as you stand on the cliffs looking out at the world below. With colorful, almost cartoony characters and villains that you encounter, it makes the experience even better.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

There are so many games these days with great views of landscapes with amazingly crafted characters and creatures. The Witcher is no exception to that. As you explore the landscapes and experience the narrative with all the natural sights and sounds of the story; it immerses you on a fantastic journey worth repeating.

Bioshock

The entire Bioshock trilogy is visually exceptional, but Infinite takes it to the next level as you view beautifully crafted areas that take your breath away; from the dark journey through Rapture to the bright beautifully painted skies of Columbia. The characters give you equal artistic value in helpful personalities to evil intent. Not only that, the game provides thought provoking questions about right and wrong as you play. It keeps you guessing and invested as you wonder what will happen next within the storyline.

God of War

With each game of God of War that’s released the story, lands and adventure levels up the experience of each game. Santa Monica Studios, in their latest addition created an emotional narrative as Kratos and his son travel to spread his wive’s ashes. Not only will you get a journey through amazingly crafted terrain, but a story narrative that will pull at your heart. This is a fantastic game with great visuals and a story to match.

Skyrim V: The Elder Scrolls

The creators of Skyrim put their all into this game as you experience not only the adventure of dragons and traversing mountains, valleys and more, but the realistic graphics are amazingly well done. Along with the ablity to craft the type of character you wish to play, you create your own adventure due to your chosen character. The world and scale of Skyrim is a wonderfully crafted land that immerses you as you journey through the land. One you wish you could visit in real life, but will settle with re-immersing yourself as you continue to play.

Final Thoughts

Video games have gained traction with their ability to create something beautiful. Not just with the art of the game, but also the story, characters, music and more. They are getting better and better and I’m sure the future will hold even more phenomenal additions to the video game world.

There are so many games out there today that are just so good that if I added them all this list would extend far too long to feel comfortable reading in one sitting. Add your favorite artful video games in the comments to continue the list and give others a new game to try!
